The Women by Kristin Hannah

5.0

Frankie was a badass character! Her bravery, compassion, & quick learning in the midst of danger. My heart broke for her and her relationships w/ both parents. The fact that they were lying about where she had been and weren't proud of her service and sacrifice was infuriating. I can't imagine not having family to lean on when things are tough, but her friendships with Barb and Ethel were amazing. They were always there to help her when she reached her newest lows. We didn't need Jamie to come back in the end... finally getting her parents' acceptance was enough. I really wanted things to work out with her and Henry, but that's the optimist in me. The betrayal... RYE!!! Ughhh I have never felt so betrayed by a fictional character before! And the betrayal of Americans in general and how they treated veterans when coming home. I had no idea that there was so much hate towards those that served and that there was denial about women's role in the war. It was so frustrating to see Frankie try to reach out for help and be denied over and over. I enjoyed all of the song lyrics embedded throughout the book as it reminded me of my dad and the music he listens to and I heard growing up.
