trashwizard 's review for:
The Nest
by Eli Cantor, Gregory A. Douglas
I have been looking forward to reading The Nest since Valancourt Books reissued it as part of their Paperbacks from Hell series. I love creature features and monster books, but admittedly I had set the bar kind of low for a book about killer mutant cockroaches.
I was wrong.
The writing throughout the book was very good - so many fantastic five-dollar adjectives! And so very, very descriptive, especially in the gory parts. The pacing is good and the prose engaging, if often over the top (the expression "tarnation" occurs at least twice). I was also impressed by the amount of research that Mr. Douglas clearly did for the book - I learned more about cockroaches, ants, and termites in the last few days than I would have ever thought possible. There's a lot of hard science in here, and great stuff about animal behavior and evolution.
It's also super gross - a person is devoured from the inside out by cockroaches that climbed up his butt, for instance. And the roaches will devour your brain while you are still using it to react in shock that roaches are devouring your brain. I'm not sure of the neuroscience on that one, but it certainly makes for a fun read!
The Nest is a high-quality, silly, often-hilarious gross-out fest, and it is absolutely delightful.
