An Eye for an Eye by Anthony Trollope

1.0

Jesus Christ, this is laughably bad, which is a shame because Trollope wrote He Knew He Was Right and The Way We Live Now - two of my favourite novels and both are so rich and entertaining. An Eye for An Eye is embarrassing. Absolutely nothing happens for the first third of the book (and it's only 169 pages long), the characters are flat, the story is melodramatic and silly, the pacing is off and the dialogue is stale. He gives us page after page of useless backstories that bear no relevance to the ACTUAL story, and none of which explain the characters' motives for their bizarre, implausible behaviour. It certainly doesn't have any substance and yet doesn't have a good story to take its place. It has no merit whatsoever, and this is Anthony Trollope at his worst. Don't waste your time on this slapdash garbage - read He Knew He Was Right, The Way We Live Now and The Warden instead, 'cause Trollope's heart wasn't in this one, that's for sure.
