The Thousand and One Ghosts by Alexandre Dumas

3.0

Despite the title, the best story in this book was about vampires, not ghosts, and unfortunately it came at the end, after I'd mostly checked out. I wish that Dumas had written an entire book about vampires because I love the way that he writes people, very warm and vivid. And I love me some good, old-fashioned Eastern European vampires. The framing device of this book was never resolved, which was irritating, and the other stories were fine but not particularly compelling. I did think that it was sweet that Dumas inserted himself into the story, which was a fad for these sorts of stories but it made me smile, especially when he showed strangers immediately warming up to him. Overall, not a classic in the genre from a man who did writes classics in other genres.
