I took forever to get through the first 20% of the book because I felt like nothing was happening. Then boom, around page 100 it got un-put-downable.
Still loving this series for the magic system and the familiar teens learning magic and saving the world setup mixed with the less familiar (to me) Nigerian context. Honestly, what nerd doesn't love the idea of a world where money falls from the sky to reward you for learning?
Our main character is Nigerian, born and partly raised in the US, and one of our supporting characters is American living in Nigeria. So you get things sprinkled in like conversations where these characters generalize - theorize? philosophize? - about Black America, written by an author born in America to Nigerian immigrant parents. The Nigerian/American culture stuff doesn't distract from the story, it feels natural. It's just not the sort of thing you see in most American YA fantasy, and the worldview here is one of the things that makes going back to SFF's typical settings after this seem kinda boring.
Sadly, I can't find an expected publication date yet for a third one. Sigh.
