American Son by Brian Ascalon Roley

2.0

I'm a bit hesitant giving this book a 2/5 because for me, it falls a little short. More of a 2.5? Actually, I’ll stick with 2 even though I can see how the book was important to have at the time when published in 2001.

Overall, the book touches upon a lot of aspects of what it's like to be Fil-Am in Los Angeles. It reads more as an anecdote rather than a story and there's no life lessons or characters changing their ways. It's more of life and the life people feel they were forced to live.

Hopefully, if you can relate to the story with how you grew up, the book will leave you with a lot of questions for you to think about for yourself. However, if not or if you have been thinking about those questions for a while then this book will feel like it's missing something and needs more depth.
