Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

4.0

I love the premise of this book. Someone in a group recommended this and said that this series changed their life. What else was I supposed to do but have a look and see what type of book does that?
For me, would this be the first part of a life-changing reading experience? No.
Would this be an absolute page turner that keeps me reading? No.

This book has a great concept. A girl with tattoos on her hands, naturally blue hair, a demon-man for a father, and doors to anywhere in the world... what more is there when you've got these things, and yet, something falls flat. Maybe it's the perfectness of Karou - or her complete naivety, or that nothing seems to be developed before we kick off into Plot.
I think we needed more world development in a way. If we'd had more development as the plot started ramping up then we might have lost tension. I think there needed to be a balance. I felt like I had too many unanswered questions as the plot progressed. I had no attachment to some characters before they were ripped away, and too much time getting attachments to characters we wouldn't see again until the next book at the earliest.

It feels like a first book. It feels like Laini Taylor is finding her universe as she writes this and I think that doesn't leave us with much to attach to.
Yet, the premise. I love the idea of collecting teeth and having wishes so I kept coming back. It didn't play a large part in this book and I needed to know what it would do for the next.
