Oh man, this book?
This book hits incredibly close to home for me. I remembered having read it before, but I couldn’t remember anything about it. I’d always planned to read it again, and I’m really glad I did!
It’s a pretty short read, even at 151 pages, but I don’t believe that’s a bad thing. It’s said everything that needed to be said, and although the ending comes quite quickly, I found it pretty satisfying.
I really like how Callie decided at the end that she wanted to get better. When it comes to something like self-harm or anxiety, there’s always going to be a bit of a struggle, times where you get better and regress but come back stronger than before, and I’m really glad the book didn’t end with her just magically cured.
It takes a bit to connect with the characters and you’re introduced to all of them at the same time so it’s hard to remember who is who, but it was fun getting to see some of their own stories. Tiffany showing everybody her baby blanket when she left gave me a pang in my chest, and I couldn’t even tell you why. I also think it makes sense that we didn’t get to see all of their stories, since this was Callie’s story and we can only know what she does. Though I definitely would have loved to see more of all of them, more of Sydney, Tara, Debbie, Tiffany, and Becca. Amanda was…fine. And I really liked Ruby. I love sweet old lady characters 🥹
Callie’s issues with her Dad hit close to home for me, her relationship with her brother, her relationship with her Mom, EVERYTHING hit so incredibly close to home for me it was actually PAINFUL, but that’s also just me. I do think the average person would enjoy this, and if not, I atleast think that the reasons for self-harming are accurate and explained very well, as someone who has struggled in the past. The characters are pretty well-written too, in my opinion, and the struggles with eating disorders and self-harm are conveyed appropriately.
