Castle Rackrent and Ennui by Maria Edgeworth

3.5

This was an amusing book - the two shorter novels, Castle Rackrent and Ennui, went really well together as a pair, and though I am sure there were many references and jokes that I didn’t get, Edgeworth’s candid representations of characters shine true of people you could meet today. I didn’t know much about the setting of this book, but the Penguin edition had a thorough introduction and decent notes which helped to illuminate some of the more obscure references. Not for everyone, but worth a read if you are interested in the history or literature of the era.
