The Delphi Effect by Rysa Walker

2.0

Uh-oh. Brace yourself for all my rants.

First, its false advertising. It’s marketed as science fiction, but I think it's more into YA contemporary, paranormal and mystery with a sci-fi touch that barely feels. The cover was intriguing and the premise was attractive enough for a sci-fi feels. Yes, there are some kind of secret project conspiracies and its connection with psychic abilities. But, that’s it. No deeper digging into the project or maybe some sci-fi things like malfunctioning system, or maybe some experimental science scene will be great, though.

Second, its super slow pace. The plot was finally making sense and exciting after about 170-ish pages. In fact, once the story becomes clear, unfortunately it starts to fall apart again.

Third, its messy plots. Really jumping around from the start. I don't really know where this story is going to focus on, because there's so much to explain, so many characters that are malfunctioning, and so is the main points that became so blurry. This then raises the question, which side does the writer really want to highlight? Its mystery? Its paranormal side? Its contemporary side? Or the sci-fi side? Because none of them stands out and strong enough to make a good story.

Fourth, its weakness for the characters’ background and improvements. I'm just frustrated with almost every character here, especially Anna, our narrator. Definitely not a great character, boring, passive and maybe a little naive. No, I'm not expecting a kick-ass superwoman, but hopefully she’s smarter than this.

Fifth, the last rant from me, its writing style isn’t my cup of tea. It’s actually pretty good for its flowy side. But somehow, there are a lot of descriptive scenes which confuse me.

So I've come to the conclusion, this book actually has a very interesting story, but, uh, it lacks focus and lacks strength make this book less attractive. If I may continue to the next book in this series, may all the flaws be mended and the story becomes more interesting. *fingers crossed*
