The Rise and Reign of the Mammals: A New History, from the Shadow of the Dinosaurs to Us by Steve Brusatte

informative reflective medium-paced

4.0

I enjoyed Brusatte’s previous book about dinosaurs a few years ago, and this ‘sequel’ was just as good. It is absolutely ram packed with facts, but still easy to read and follow. Brusatte explains the different ages and evolution of mammals clearly, with some good storytelling to intersperse the factual sections. I learnt some really interesting bits of information from this book and it definitely developed my understanding of mammals - there’s a lot more to their evolution than you would think. I found it particularly interesting to read about how mammals coexisted with dinosaurs, how their sizes changed according to temperature and how more familiar types of mammals (monkeys, canines and felines) only evolved fairly recently in the grand scheme of things.
A very interesting book that I would recommend.
