Superman stories are consistently hard to tell well. The more the man is established as the undefeatable god-like being, the harder time you have telling stories with meaning.

A lot of modern tellings(aka Synder) have resorted to making Superman broody and troubled. Then your story conflicts are internal and we the reader are left wondering how he'll react.

This story is a welcome change of pace from that. It's a story that's been told in many ways, Superman is dying for a complicated series of reasons, but what that does is give Superman the undefeatable foe - his impending death. And in this we can really dwell in what makes Superman really super - his endless desire to help humanity. We see him struggle against the ticking clock to do as much good as he can.
