I think the attempt to make it interconnected story weakened it. The stories on their own weren't bad, but the author continued to force in the underlying plotline for the town. In all honesty, I think I would have enjoyed the stories better without them. As they had to play into the repetitive "man goes mad" to fit into the underlying plotline, it felt like I was reading six repetitive novellas which made me tired about 1/2 way in. I basically skimmed through the 5th story and barely finished the sixth.
