Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

3.0

I'm pretty sure I read The Pearl a long time ago in school. I honestly don't remember it at all. I had a vague idea from cultural references what this one was about. And I'm aware that Steinbeck won the Nobel in 1962. So essentially this was my first foray into his work. It was okay. Maybe a little better than average. The setting, dialogue, and characters seemed authentic; however, the story as a whole seemed a bit maudlin and contrived. The ending was horrific and so sudden. I was hoping I'd like it a good bit more. Perhaps something else he's written.
