Captain Underpants and the Preposterous Plight of the Purple Potty People by Dav Pilkey

3.0

I can understand why this is a popular series with kids. I started out really enjoying it, but by the end I wasn't really all that interested. Two friends step into a purple port-a-potty time machine and get transported to a parallel and opposite universe. In the parallel universe, their counterparts are evil and their principal is good (but turns into the bad Captain Blunderpants instead of the good Captain Underpants). The writing is quirky, grandparent lovebirds get naked and become superheros, and...wait...what? I don't know. The storyline just spiraled into utter madness by the end. And both my daughter and I were left feeling cheated that there were no purple people in the entire story. I suppose that the "Purple Potty People" are just the people (not purple) that were encountered when the boys traveled to the parallel universe in their purple port-a-potty. But, gosh, look at the title; did you really think this was going to be high literature? It's definitely for the age range you think it's for and appeals to silly, silly toilet humor. It's fun in parts, but it's really not sane.
