Bosnia: A Short History by Noel Malcolm

challenging informative

4.25

This is a helpful recounting of Bosnian history, including the ways in which power shifted and was shared over the centuries between the three religious affiliations and the different ethnic heritages. The last three chapters are particularly helpful to understanding the speed with which media was taken over and used to convince neighbors to turn against each other - pure propaganda that was enormously effective in causing violence and the display to the rest of the western world claiming it was a civil war "between equal sides". We know much more now and would do well to guard against the conditions that led to this tragedy.
