I expected this to have the same magic as Ashley Poston's books (THE DEAD ROMANTICS, THE SEVEN YEAR SLIP), but I really never quite connected to the writing as much as I had hoped. Everything felt a little distant and I was very aware that I was being told a story and that I just wasn't immersed in it. I also wasn't really sure what the point of the book was at first... was it more contemporary or more romance? It seemed like a good love story was the final destination of this story, but halfway through and I really didn't feel like I was falling in love with anyone at all.

Once things cleared themselves up a bit, I found a destination and was really liking where it was going. I think the main character kept too many things from the audience and a little surprise reveal in the middle would have hit me better if it was a part of the book from the start. I also was hoping to lean into the notes a little bit more. We did get to see the relationships, but it just felt like "here's a past relationship" instead of really feeling connected to the magic of it all.

I listened to this as an audiobook, narrated by Julia Whelan who is normally a favorite, and this is one of the few times that I've felt bored by her narration. I just felt like we were wading through a book and she was reading me a story instead of feeling like she WAS the character. I think that has more to do with the writing than her narration because it just wasn't compelling enough to make a connection.

The concept is great, there are some beautiful quotes, and I did like the overall story, but I just lacked a connection to it and taking so long to really feel like we were falling in love prevented me from being present in the story.
