Amulet Book Series - Books 1-7 by Kazu Kibuishi

A fairly entertaining junior (possibly YA if you squint). The story starts a bit heavy handed, establishing a tragic backstory and character motivation with the death of a parent within the first 5 pages.
Once you get past that, the story really does come into its own, and the author has done an incredibly good job of creating a world that is compelling and has enough depth and nuance to intrigue older readers.
The pacing, especially with the first book, felt a little bit rushed. All the major events of the plot seemed to happen really fast, right about the time I was getting invested, boom- book over. That was my only issue really with the first installment, I really just wanted it to go on longer than it did.
Going into the 2nd installment, I was a bit apprehensive since I had *liked* the first one, but it didn't blow me away.
The later installments, however, were significantly better than the initial, as there is more character and world development, and more investment into the plot. Whereas the first book felt like we were moving from one plot event to the next, the later books spend more time developing the plot in a way that feels much more natural and doesn't feel as rushed.
The story lines also mature as the books go along, starting in the first book as a solidly junior story, but grows into a more decidedly YA as the story progresses.
I'm looking forward to the last couple books in the series, how Kibuishi wraps it all up, since there is a fairly complex series of plot lines and character relationships that need to be wrapped up.
