No Love Lost by Margery Allingham

Two novellas originally published in the 1950s. "Safer Than Love" has aged better than "The Patient at Peacock's Hall"; the latter really only makes sense if you accept the very 1950s attitudes to love, marriage and relationships, while the former, with a narrator who finds her innocuous actions and the she lies told to avoid embarrassment coming back to haunt her, feels very plausible. "The Patient at Peacock's Hall" is very interesting about early attitudes to the NHS though, if you're into that sort of thing!
