Concrete Rose is the prequel to The Hate You Give. Maverick, Starr’s dad, is only 17 and he’s drifting through life. He barely goes to school, he occasionally sells drugs and he’s part of a gang. His one night stand shows up one day with his 3 month old son and just abandons him. It’s not all bad, he truly loves the boy and names him Seven. Maverick’s  only redeemer is his cousin Dre but, when Dre is murdered, Maverick nearly  loses his way. This book  brings the family story full circle.
