Six Four
by Hideo Yokoyama
I read "50" last year and it intrigued me, so I started on "64" this year. I think its because the author transports you to Japan through his writing, almost as if its natural. Its not that he emphasizes all the "japanese things" his characters do or tries to create a special japanese background by ticking of all the cliché boxes for Japan - I think it´s rather the fact that these books are written for a japanese reader and everything is just displayed like everyday japanese reality. It´s like diving into japanese life, at once.
Apart from the obvious, it´s his writing that draws you in - the short sentences, the almost laconic reasoning. I don´t find it easy to read because the style is dry and not very "welcoming" to me, and sometimes I get lost between all these fine degrees of status in Japanese police.... but still - the story and their many twists and turns intrigued me so much that I stuck through all the 400 (?) pages.
