Prosper's Demon by K.J. Parker

4.0

Rated 3.5/5 rounded up because I laughed out loud on my commute.

This was a fun and clever little read. There's a bit of philosophy, a film noir-type main character, some of your usual "good and evil, or greater and lesser evil" type discourse, entertaining language in the writing, a good dash of dark humor and generally just a quite satisfying novella. And honestly, I don't expect less of Parker.
