Death du Jour by Kathy Reichs

3.0

The great news is, I didn't hate this book. Considering my reaction to the first book, that's a bloody miracle.

The bad news is, there's nothing really special about these books. I really like murder mysteries, whodunnits. They're fluffy reads, despite the, you know, death and dismemberment. They're mindless, and fun to try to figure it out before the end. But they all pretty much run together.

If these books were even 1/4 of what the television show based on them was, they'd be fantastic. Because Brennan is a fascinating and unique character. But in book form, she's very flat and two dimensional. Show Brennan is emotionless and straight to business about everything, while still showing respect to the victims on her table. Book Brennan is omigod these poor people woe woe woe.

Stop that. You can be respectful of the victims without bloody well harping on them. Police and investigators do it every day. Sure, dead babies are sad, but dear god, with the harping.

The plot was SUPER interesting. I love anything involving cults. But really? Thank heavens for
SpoilerBrennan happening to be in the EXACT SPOTS in two different countries where these cults were. Not in any way convoluted, whatsoever!
.

I got really upset at the cat thing, though.
SpoilerAnd even more upset to learn that a poor cat from the animal shelter was the victim. Poor kitty.

So, I am willing to continue with the series. But this budding relationship between Brennan and Ryan is going to make me want to pluck my eyeballs out, I can feel it already.

And that narrator? NEVER GOT BETTER. If she narrates future books, I'm skipping those.

Despite really disliking the first novel, I'm going to give it one more chance, and go with this one.

I. fucking. hate. this. narrator. What part of the United States are you from, because I am never going there. Exyumed. Hewm (home). I swear to fucking god, I want to reach in and fucking rip every shred of your hair out.
