A reporter, Cora Mayburn had to travel to North Carolina to talk with Michael, a town priest, about snake handling. While Cora was in North Carolina to do her job, she heard about the girl, Leah, who got bit by the snake while snake handling. Hence, she decided to visit Lea and maybe had some interviews with her. However, on the way to Leah’s house she noticed something strange, for example, the birds and the plants suddenly died in front of Cora, and then after, they went back to live again, like a resurrection. Cora will have to find the answer to what happened to Leah before it’s too late.

Before I start this review, I must tell you guys that if you are not a fan of violence or eccentric books, you might wanna pass this one because it’s really full-on.

Beneath is a supernatural horror book published by an independent publisher. It was very brutal and grotesque. For instance, the child sexual abuse scenes that were explained in detail and explicitly, the sadistically violent scenes, or the most disgusting and bizarre sex scenes.

When I read the synopsis, I found it interesting and promising because religion horror is the sub-genre I really like. Even so, after I finished the book, I realized that snake handling wasn’t the main story, the religion was. The book referred to Bible quite often. If you’re a Christian, you might understand some. The monster was the best. Try as I may I can never explain how frightened and hideous it was. I made the warped face a few times. In terms of the writing, it was smooth and easy to read but not engaging which is super heartbreaking. Besides, the ending was awful. The ending was like rush, rush, rush because maybe the author or some editor thought the book was too long, I don’t know but that’s the impression I got. Therefore, this book is not as perfect as I thought.

Ultimately, this book might not be for everyone but if you read the review and find it assuring, go grab a copy.
