The Bone Houses by Emily Lloyd-Jones

3.0

the storytelling was SO fairytale… the pitch was perfect there; however, i almost think it was to the book’s detriment because never once was i invested in the lives or actions of these characters—they were an arm’s length away. then, there was so much focus on there being lore, yet… where was the expansion of it? it was a lot of talking instead of showing and it didn’t help that the major reveal (and the minor ones) were pretty predictable.

i did like the pacing though and how the plot unfolded, even with the slow burn. it’s just a shame that i was left with wanting more because the prose was truly terrific—so much potential wasted, i almost wonder if we could’ve benefited from an extra 100 pages since it’s a standalone.
