This book is a very slow paced read. Diamond is a Black teen whose dad disappeared 7 years ago and her mom (who is not always as present as she could be for her daughter) wants to declare him legally dead to get insurance money.
The town where they live, they are the only Black folks so there is a lot of prejudice towards them. Diamond is also bigger so she's constantly made fun of because of her weight by other teens.
Diamond gets to know about her Dad through letters from 2 generations of women in her line.
