Hello, Goodbye, and Everything in Between by Jennifer E. Smith

4.0

My issues with this book are purely based on preference, mood, and my own biases, so feel free to disregard. It was good, but I love Jennifer E. Smith books, and this wasn't my favorite.

Hello, Goodbye, and Everything in Between follows a teenager couple, Clare and Aidan, who are leaving for college on opposite sides of the country in 12 hours. They have one last night together where they will revisit the most significant people and places of their two year relationship and decide if they will continue to date despite the long distance or breakup.

I am not gonna lie. I was expecting this book to be a little more cutesy, but it was a lot sadder than I expected. The last 25% was cuteish, but the focus was less on the romance and more on the way Clare and Aidan change and develop as they come to terms with the fact that no matter what they choose, in 12 hours everything will be different. Having been through this exact situation when I was a teenager (and having made the wrong choice), the book hit a little too close to home for me and brought up some less than pleasant memories. If it had focused more on the cutesy romance of this particular couple instead of their internal struggle, I probably would've enjoyed it more. However, Jennifer E. Smith's writing was impeccable as always, and she really effectively developed both main and side characters that you care about and root for. She did an excellent job ensuring her readers would really feel what her characters were feeling. Overall, I would recommend it as long as you don't go into it expecting a light and fluffy romance.
