There were parts of this that were excellent, but overall it was too uneven for me. It’s based on the USA’s history of conducting horrific and unethical medical studies on black and brown people. There are too many moving parts in the book that don’t all fully coalesce, and there are aspects that are too half-baked. It’s still a disturbing and unnerving read, but it also doesn’t fully explore what it needs to. Ultimately, I think it probably would have worked better as a short story or novella.
