Malala: My Story of Standing Up for Girls' Rights by Malala Yousafzai

5.0

A thoughtful insight into an inspiring figure. This book is the abridged and adapted version of Malala Yousafzai's memoir, and is perfect for grades 3-5 as a free choice read or a social studies complementary text. It details Malala's childhood, the growing unrest in her country, the tightening restrictions imposed on women, and Malala's growth into an activist and leader. The story is told in Malala's own words, in first-person, giving the reader insight into her thoughts and feelings.
The book features small, black and white illustrations throughout, done in a simplistic, almost Pixar-like style. The illustrations would help the book seem accessible to younger readers.
The book also includes brief side-bars which provide extra information about things mentioned in the text, like describing Ramadan, traditional clothing, and the Malala Fund. The extra information doesn't distract from the narrative, but provides reference for readers who may be confused or curious.
