Feathered by Laura Kasischke

The writing in this book blew me away. It's hard to describe it without using words that sound just a tad pretentious...lyrical, vivid, poetic, you get the point. The quality of the writing kept me going although I was not initially a big fan of the switch between 1st person POV for one character and 3rd person for another. Once I got used to it I was fine and I appreciated seeing the same events from two completely different perspectives.

Disclaimer: this book is a bit of a bait and switch. It has a magical realism vibe, heavily steeped in Mayan culture and Queztalcotal legend, that made me think something supernatural was going to happen. The big storyline event/'bad thing' that is referenced in the blurb is not supernatural, however, the writing and what one of the characters experiences as a result is portrayed in a mystical way.

I did favor one of the characters much more highly than the other. In fact, the other character made me angry and I am not sure I quite forgave her at the end. The third character was unnecessary to the story, and I am not sure why she was included. Not that it detracted from the story...just curious as to the decision to keep her in because she didn't really add anything or move the plot along.

Ultimately, Feathered put a spell on me. I could not put it down. I finished this book the same day Natalee Holloway was declared officially dead, and that made it hit home all the more. I HAD to know if the characters were going to be ok at the end...I HAD to know what was going to happen. This is the kind of book you will think about for days after finishing. I will be reading "The Raising" by this author soon.
