The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco

3.0

This trilogy has been on my wishlist for quite some time already, so when Illumicrate announced that they were gonna do a special edition set I had to get them. The books are insanely pretty, but the thing with those bookbox books is that they always look a little intimidating and therefore stay on the shelves for a long time. Until a friend of mine invited me for a buddy read. After comparing our tbr's we picked this book and gave ourselves a week to read it.

It's hard to rate this book and that's mostly because it feels like the story has only just gotten started. This book is for the biggest part world building. A very young girl is discovered to be "a bone witch" and together with her we go through training, learn the customs and see what is needed to become one of the famous Ashas. In between all the world building there is some politics and we see a hint of rebellion, but the book is only going there slowly.

The main reason I never gave up on the book, are the small snippets in between every chapter, showing us the situation in the future. It's clear that even the end of the book doesn't catch up with the timeline of these snippets, but seeing where it eventually would go and at what point we'd eventually get kept me motivated to continue reading. I wanted to know how she got there and why she got there.

However, because of the loads of world building and very little plot I had a hard time connecting with the character. In this book she's mostly following the rules, or ending up in trouble. It somehow feels like we don't learn that much about her personality, partly because she's still developing one to begin with. I therefore can't really care about her yet. I do hope that the next two books will change that. We're gonna wait and see when I feel like reading them.
