Philomel Cottage: A Short Story by Agatha Christie

4.0

Enjoyable, twisty tale. The ending is delightfully ambiguous. One has to wonder if Alix is an unreliable narrator.
SpoilerLots of possible interpretations. Is it possible the husband was innocent, and events around him just made him look suspicious? Maybe. His controlling behavior (insisting on going to the village, on following her in while she made the call, on the photography even though she wasn't in the mood) makes me think that even if he wasn't planning to kill her, he was still an abusive sod. Was Alix making up her stories about murdering other husbands? Again, maybe. Was the coffee really poisoned, or was it a placebo effect? So many ways this could be interpreted, and I love it.
