This book is written in Sam and Kate's alternating POV. The Prologue recalls a traumatic event involving Sam from the previous book and then continues a year and half later. I believe this book could be read as a standalone, but I would recommend reading the others in this series to gain the background information and help you to appreciate all Sam has been through. I do need to mention, having read this series in order, I was a little confused with the epilogue of the previous book to ending of this book; some things in the story did not match up. The author's writing is intriguing and I loved the connection between Sam and Kate, I just felt like part of their story was missing and rushed through.
