Fantasy & Science Fiction, November/December 2014 by Paul Di Filippo, Scott Baker, Tim Sullivan, David Gerrold, K.J. Kabza, Charles de Lint, Rand B. Lee, Gordon Van Gelder, Michael Libling, Albert E. Cowdrey, Alan Dean Foster, Justin Barbeau

3.0

Highlights: The three, shall we say, "creature features,” — Sullivan’s “Yeshua’s Dog,” Baker’s “Feral Frolics,” and Cowdrey’s disturbing “Golden Girl” (sorry, bit of a spoiler there) — were very good; hey, they could have done an animal-themed issue instead of whatever that vague “political-correctness” theme was supposed to be.

The novellas were the standout of the issue: Michael Libling’s “Hollywood North,” though somewhat unresolved and too open-ended for me, had me hooked with its protagonists and evocation of small-town life. I love Village-with-a-Secret stories, and this one was interesting and complex in ways I didn’t expect.

The other favorite was Rand B. Lee’s excellent “The Judging.” I missed Lee’s first story from 2013, but this beautifully imagined universe of jagged probability zones is one I want to spend more time in, i.e., I’d happily read a whole series. Also, I want a telepathic dog.
