TL:DR An antihero heroine who wants to be the hero of her own story, but in a narrative not too dark to lose her soul.

The Sea Serpent's Heir Book 1 sets the stage for an epic seafaring adventure. Protagonist Aella is a compelling character. The "monster inside me" trope is reminiscent of Monstress by Majorie Lu, but this narrative is slightly less dark and appropriate for younger teens and middle grade audiences. Aella's character development is not the typical route of the moral protagonist, which makes this story all the more compelling. The plot itself and supporting figures are also interesting. There are cults, betrayals, pirates, witches, and more. All of which forward the story, and none of which feel out of place in such a fantastical tale.
