Religion: A Discovery in Comics by Margreet de Heer

3.0

A bit on the short side for such an intense subject, I must be completely honest and humbly admit that I learned a few things. If nothing else, the diagrams about the Buddhist and Hindu texts was something I really needed to be more aware of. I also finally got around to reading the wikipedia page on the Dutch Reformed Church (in which the author grew up but was not really touched on in the book itself).

I would not recommend this to anyone who already knows even a little bit about all five religions, but it could certainly be a way to draw people in who might be interested but are put off by large blocks of text or something.

I was definitely put off a little bit by the art style, which seemed to be drawing more from the artistic tradition of religious tracks then anything else. But besides the digital gradients/backgrounds her drawing style does reflect her more lighthearted and fun approach to this serious topic.

Margreet's tone was probably my favorite part of the book really. Being a religious person in this day and age can get seriously awkward at times and she navigates the territory well. Letting herself be extremely vulnerable de Heer emphasizes the journey and questioning over resolution, but in a way that feels very informative and interesting.
