The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

dark emotional funny inspiring sad medium-paced

5.0

Never have I cried, laughed, and cheered so loud, while reading a book. My heart dropped every time the grim reaper (though he claimed not to be the grim reaper humans made him out to be, I’m still going to call him that nevertheless) foreshadowed the future. I read with dread, awaiting the worst to unfold. Liesel—a young girl, so full of life; with so much love developed for the people around her, growing up absorbing them and had cherished a Jew as if he were her own family, all despite being German. This contradiction overwhelmed me with emotions. On numerous of occasions, I found myself brimming with tears. I can’t get over the mixed-feelings. What I know is that the overwhelming emotions I’m feeling now will turn into a beautiful longing for the book after some time.

P.S. I picked up some German along the way. Some of them being Saumensch, Saukerl, and Arschloch. I find the irony hilarious.
