The Boy Who Loved Math: The Improbable Life of Paul Erdos by Deborah Heiligman

4.0

This is a good example of a modern "living" book, narrative nonfiction in picture-book form, written by an author passionate the subject. I read this to my kids even though they're older. Math is not their favorite subject to say the least. But this book did as I had hoped - made them laugh and sparked interest and gave them a living idea - that math is fascinating and some people spend their whole lives enjoying numbers and gleefully working on problems. We were all inspired to watch the "N is a Number" documentary about the life of Erdos. Today my younger son wanted to draw one of the geometry problems that Erdos worked on. This, in my opinion, is the open door where books should lead us.
