Genderfluid document restorationist in about 2003 finds a letter from a lesbian and/or trans masc person in the 1930s. I'm fond of the historical mystery genre, but I was having trouble relating to the characters, who felt artificial. I kept finding the 2003 setting jarring, and I can't tell if it was because the Post-Twin Towers NYC part felt forced, or just that the conversation about gender identity was so different back then and it maybe felt like the author had picked that time to give the main character a more limited set of tools. Which is legit! Just not working for me in this case.
