If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that I love a book with some strong character development. I think this is especially important in Middle Grade novels because kids need to either be able to see themselves in a character or be able befriend, trust, and learn from a character that is different from them. Unfortunately, Bud, Not Buddy lacked the characters that I look for in a story. Some characters were very lovable, like Mr. Lewis, the grandfather that drives Bud to find his father and Ms. Thomas, but generally, most fell flat. While we were supposed to love the band members that took Bud in, there were too many for me to keep them straight and attach to any of them in particular. Overall, this made the book feel particularly slow for me. ⁣⁣
