Tokyo Ghoul, Tome 2 by Sui Ishida

Where the first volume of Tokyo Ghoul focussed on Ken Kaneki, this second volume focuses more on Touka, and blends this nicely with how Ken navigates his new life in this weird and violent world.
Touka works in Anteiku and is also a ghoul. She doesn’t really fancy Ken all that much, if it was up to her he wouldn’t even be at Anteiku to begin with. But as the owner does have a weak spot for Ken, or rather, is really compassionate and morally righteous, he has taken Ken under his wing. Touka does help Ken when possible, she is just not all that loving towards him.
But Ken has to learn how to navigate his now unsatiable hunger, which he cannot satisfy with human foods. His descriptions of how each human food now tastes are really detailed and also kind of funny. Although the things he describes also take away my appetite. He has to learn about turf wars and how to navigate them,, how the ghoul world operates and everything it involves. But even more important, he has to learn how to balance his human side with his ghoul side. He is both, and he is unique in that.

The owner of Anteiku has appointed Touka as a sort of mentor for Ken. And through that we also get a better look at Touka herself. We get to see what drives her, what angers her and how she looks at the world. And I have a feeling that she does actually like Ken…
As the recent situations have attracted the attention of the police, or rather the so called doves from the CCG, Ken now needs a mask to hide his identity. Touka takes him to Uta who will make a mask which is perfectly tailored to Ken. I have a soft spot for Uta, he is not only good looking but he is quirky and weird and has a sense of humor.
This second part effortlessly continues the story, weaving in more information about the other characters while nicely balancing the main character in the story line. You really get drawn in to the story, as if you were there, as if you were a character in the book yourself. And the ending is the second part…. it kept me on the edge of my seat and had me grabbing for the third book as a deranged person…. And I do have to mention that the anime serie and the manga serie complement each other flawlessly.
Fun fact: Sui Ishida is the author’s penname; nobody knows his real name or what he looks like.
