A Murder at Rosamund's Gate by Susanna Calkins

3.0

I did enjoy this book but I have to take it down to a 3-star simply due to historical inaccuracies and slow start.

Let’s look at this in great depth:

a) Glaring historical errors including many characters acting very 21st century despite this proclaiming to be set in 1666. It seemed as though the author wanted to write a modern story and didn’t want to play by the rules regarding historical accuracy which made me wonder what the point was in the end. Why not just write a modern book? (Which is funny because I probably wouldn’t have read it if it had been modern but never mind....)

b) I almost gave up on this a few times. It’s well over 100 pages in before anything of consequence happens. Once it does, the book picks up pace and is quite enthralling. However, I would imagine that many people gave up on it simply because of the painfully slow start. (To put this in perspective, the first 100 pages I covered over three days due to lack of interest but I finished the rest of it in a few hours!)

The story is told well, the characters (although not historical accurate) are likeable enough and the premise is interesting.
