Fables, Vol. 18: Cubs in Toyland by Mark Buckingham, Gene Ha, Bill Willingham

A brilliant story arc. It was nice to concentrate on the Wolf Cubs especially after hearing their destinies. In fact Destiny is the theme for this whole volume.
I don't want to include any spoilers so my references are a bit vague...
I found this book to be something of a psychological horror story. The events, the circumstance and what happens to people are horrid. This tale is harrowing at times and I caught myself saying "oh no!"
It shows that sibling love and rivalry go hand in hand, that you should appreciate what you have. Paying penance is also highlighted with the undertones that you can't make up for past misdeeds on the inside, but you can try.
Bill Willingham is a master story teller and within this arc, it comes across. The writing is fluid and as a whole a beautiful yet terrible story accompanied by gorgeous art work. A real treat for Fables fans.
I even enjoyed the extra story 'The Destiny Game' which fits wonderfully with the main piece. It's always nice to go back in time and fill in on events that help build and shape much loved characters. When you think about it though, the revelation of this characters destiny in full is horrid and to many would be their worst nightmare.
