"Eryx" is a terrible, terrible name for an MMC. It reminds me of "coccyx", the scientific name for the tailbone. Should you read the book, you'll see why this is funny.

Anyway, after struggling through the first 30% or so, where the protagonist's circumstances become more and more dire, and I was on the verge of dispair, I ended up really enjoying this book, even slightly more so than the first. Chrysantha is a great, yet flawed heroine, and I was rooting for her all the way.
As is often the case, the ending was a bit messy in its execution - a Renaissance equivalent of a car chase is not always necessary - and the pacing of the romance was uneven, but the chemistry of the characters was very well written. I would also like to congratulate the author for writing an Enemies to Lovers story where the couple actually are enemies in the beginning. A rare feat, indeed!

This was also far more feminist than I anticipated (I anticipated no such thing). The misogynistic societal standards were already alluded to in Alessandra's story, but here they were front and center, to the point where Chrysantha had to arrange her entire life around them (a convention Alessandra flaunted). Overall, I am pleased with this book.
