Poison by Chris Wooding

4.0

Chris Wooding is an insanely young author (I think his first book was written when he was twenty!) whose books are always more than they seem. In this one, a young girl named Poison sets out from her Marshland home to find her younger sister, who has been stolen by the Phaeries. What initially seems like the usual changeling tale shifts gears and becomes a meditation on reality, which may turn off those who prefer a more straightforward tale. Those who stick with it, however, will enjoy this thought provoking, dark, and philosophical tale. Poison herself is a winning protagonist, clever and determined, but also believable cranky at times (you don't get called "Poison" for being all sweetness and light!). This is the kind of book that warrants a rereading, and would be excellent for a discussion group.
