The Man Who Turned into a Stick: Three Related Plays by Kōbō Abe

2.0

Stick: (to himself) I’ve never once felt more satisfied. But I wonder what it would be better to turn into, rather than a stick. The one thing somebody in the world is sure to pick up is a stick.

A Man from Hell: The man’s been shut up inside the shape of a stick. He can’t do much as budge anymore, and that’s a problem.

A Woman from Hell: Supposing he begins to itch somewhere- What’ll he do? How will he fare?

Man from Hell: I’m afraid a stick would probably lack the talent needed to scratch his own back.

i now kind of understand why Abe is sometimes compared to kafka.
