The Poet by Michael Connelly

4.0

This is an older book that is in the larger Connelly universe and it shows. There is an energy that exists in this with a writer still finding characters and different ways to tell this kind of mystery story. Now, the only thing that for me was irritating was how often the main character monologues and beats around the bush at times while interacting with some of the other central figures in the story.

There can be time constraints and while we know it's a sense of urgency some of the moments are written as if the character has all of the time in the world to stop and give exposition. It somewhat stops things cold. I also like that it is an actual ending and not one that was designed to set up sequels.
