The Lovecraft Anthology, Volume 1 by Dan Lockwood, H.P. Lovecraft

4.0

I can't really review this book in terms of its faithfulness as an adaptation to its inspired texts, because I tried reading Lovecraft before, and just couldn't get through it. I didn't think I'd ever make another attempt to read Lovecraft... thank god for graphic novels!

My hope was that the added visual elements of the book would give me a little more to concentrate on than the dire text, and it was a success. In spite of the imagery being described as fairly indescribable (albeit strongly and vaguely disturbing), all of the artists did a great job rendering Lovecraft's ancient ones. I particularly liked the art for the last story "Dagon," by Alice Duke.

I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone who has ever been curious about the works of H.P. Lovecraft, but have previously found his writing to be unpalatable. Give this a try!
