The Compton Cowboys: The New Generation of Cowboys in America's Urban Heartland by Walter Thompson-Hernandez
emotional
inspiring
medium-paced
This is a fascinating read, and I'm glad they released a young adult version. Since most of the people profiled in the story were kids/teens for a chunk of their experiences I think it translates really well. The content warnings I'd give to our teens are for violence, language, and an on page horse death. I'd specifically call out the scene where the horse dies because it's pretty graphic and deeply awful for one of the young men in the book. His reaction is particularly heart-wrenching to read.
Graphic: Animal death and Racism
Moderate: Violence
