Play It as It Lays by Joan Didion

5.0

I'm just in love. Purely infatuated with this book.

I was almost afraid to read any reviews that might disturb how sensitive the love is for this book. It's depressing, the chapters are short like little bits of flash fiction in within themselves, and the characters are just a mess.

I'm so used to the formulaic plot structure that for awhile, I wasn't entirely sure what I was reading. I didn't know where I was going or what was I expecting. Like truly the blurbs and summaries don't help me at all with knowing what the plot was about. I didn't know how it was going to end even when I got down to the last few pages. And I liked that. I liked that I went on this journey of uncertainty and dread and not knowing if there was any reward at the end.

Because that's what I like - I like being depressed.

And even so, I loved every little bit of it and the slow realization I had connecting all the pieces together. Just watching Maria spiral downwards.

I'll reread this another day to really get my words together. I just wanted to write that I'm in love with this book, so it prompted me to buy another one of Joan Didion's books.
